Building a planet-first approach.

At Ecothesi, our commitment to responsible practices underpins all that we do. While we understand that perfection is an ongoing journey, we pledge to relentlessly pursue excellence across our processes. Our dedication spans beyond environmental stewardship to encompass ethical business practices and social responsibility. We are resolute in our mission to continuously improve and contribute positively, always striving to do more and do better.

Eco Factor

  • By ensuring that our time-intensive, handcrafted products are made with respect and fairness, we maintain high standards of both environmental and social responsibility. Our paced-production model, which consists—of limited, demand-based quarterly product lines—ensures that each artisan has the time to meticulously craft pieces without pressure, maintaining their well-being while achieving professional fulfillment.

  • We’re invested in sustainability beyond initial sales. Through our Renaissance Program, we accept back any product we’ve ever sold for upcycling, donating, composting, or recycling. Customers receive benefits for utilizing the program provided they return their items in plastic-free shipping. The program is designed to give our pieces a second life, reduce waste, and ensure proper disposal.

  • We proudly produce our pieces in the USA, where we adhere to stringent standards of fair labor practices and workplace safety. Our skilled artisans are compensated fairly and work in a supportive, respectful, and secure environment. Additionally, we only sell our decor in the USA to remove the carbon footprint associated with long-distance shipping and commuting.

  • Our in-house team of experts keeps us in check through various methods:

    • Waste Management: Our artisans use digital scales and measuring tools to record material weights before and after production, documenting both starting materials and any waste generated. We use this data for future reports, to manage waste disposal, and to refine our waste reduction strategies.

    • Eco Database: To support our decorators and artisans in their work and efforts, we maintain a vast database of credible, ethical suppliers who are committed to using natural, non-toxic, low-VOC and organic materials, preventing energy and materials waste, and enacting fair and ethical labor practices.

Eco Framework

  • We select the eco way by prioritizing the selection of renewable, recycled, non-toxic, low-VOC, low-impact, and certified sustainable materials in both our decorating and decor processes. Additionally, we select models of production that effectively manage waste and ensure fair labor conditions.

  • We source the eco way by aiming to keep our operations and recommendations local to minimize transportation emissions and reduce shipping waste. From end-to-end, we choose to work alongside local suppliers, retailers, and vendors who are equally as committed to delivering sustainably as we are.

  • We sustain the eco way by crafting products built to last, minimizing waste through durability. By extending the life cycle of our pieces, we can foster a more efficient use of resources. We also provide care guidelines to help customers maintain and extend the life of their decor for generations to come.

  • We support the eco way through education and advocacy, partnering with nonprofits and organizations that promote environmental awareness and sustainable living. We provide resources, support advocacy efforts, and contribute to initiatives that align with our values, fostering a community of informed and eco-conscious consumers.

Eco Function

  • We stay ahead with cutting-edge sustainability research, ensuring our practices are based on accurate, evidence-based information. Our experts assess and publicly report on our sustainability efforts, offering transparent recommendations for improvement.

Our annual Eco Impact Reports offer a look into how we're making long strides in sustainability. These reports showcase our advancements in using eco-friendly materials, enhancing energy efficiency, and driving sustainable practices. We detail our successes in waste reduction, responsible sourcing, and the promotion of environmentally conscious practices.

  • Beyond our vetted and well-researched database, we selectively conduct in-house lab testing for high-priority materials or projects where specific performance criteria need to be met.

  • We’re working to showcase our commitment to sustainability through recognized certifications. We pursue certifications such as WELL, BREEAM, and Cradle to Cradle to ensure our practices and products meet high environmental standards.

  • At Ecothesí, we are deeply committed to supporting environmental causes through active community engagement and meaningful initiatives.

    • We host studio-wide quarterly sessions via various formats such as webinars and speaking engagements covering topics from sustainable decorating to eco-conscious practices.

    • We host engaging community events, release statements on priority environmental issues, and partner with organizations and advocacy groups to advance sustainability. Additionally, we create educational materials and provide information to keep the public informed.

    • Our philanthropy efforts are driven by a thorough process to ensure impactful contributions. We start by researching, evaluating and proposing donation opportunities that align with our studio’s values and sustainability goals. Once approved, we execute the donation and confirm receipt with the organization. We document and communicate the outcomes internally, and periodically review and refine our approach to enhance our philanthropic impact.

The Advocates

Experts Championing Responsible Practices

The residential sector is a significant contributor to energy consumption, accounting for over a third of the nation’s electricity use. Meanwhile, the textile industry is a major player in waste production, with the EPA estimating that 66% of the 17 million tons of textiles generated in 2018 ended up in landfills. In response, our studio maintains a strong focus on reducing our environmental impact.

Our in-house eco practice is crucial to our commitment to sustainability. Comprising expert environmental researchers, analysts, scientists, thought leaders, and community organizers—affectionately known as our “advocates”—they maintain a database of ethical suppliers and provide expert guidance on integrating eco-friendly solutions and eco-conscious approaches into our decor and decorating practices.

They oversee material choices, manage waste, enforce paced production practices, and ensure every step aligns with our sustainability goals. Their oversight helps us stay accountable and continuously improve our practices.
